About the Speaker and Lecture

Professor David Hawes is a clinical psychologist and leading expert in child and adolescent mental health whose research spans disruptive behaviour disorders, emotion dysregulation, and evidence-based interventions. Drawing on more than two decades of academic, clinical, and translational research, David explores the complex interplay between child behaviour, emotion, family dynamics, and developmental pathways. In this lecture, he will unpack what psychologists know about oppositional behaviour and emotional dysregulation: not as labels or failures of morality or parenting, but as developmental trajectories that emerge from neurobiological, social, and environmental factors and are often highly changeable. You’ll gain clarity on how issues such as defiance, irritability, aggression and mood dysregulation can be understood within frameworks of child development, mental health, along with the impact of these issues on young people and their families, and the importance of accessing help when needed. The talk will bridge research and practice to consider how schools, families and communities can respond with understanding, support, and evidence-informed strategies.
