A Review of Alexandria’s newest wellness destination: Soak Bathhouse

I Soaked My Mum Stress Away (And You Should Too)

A review of Alexandria’s hottest new bathhouse – Soak Bathhouse

Warning: This review contains explicit descriptions of relaxation, temporary loss of guilt about taking time for yourself, and may cause sudden urges to book immediately.

Mamas, you know how it is. You’re folding laundry, answering school emails, half-reading an overdue newsletter from daycare, and trying to remember the last time you shaved your legs. Spoiler: I couldn’t. So, when a girlfriend mentioned a new urban wellness oasis had opened just 15 minutes from my place in the Inner West, I booked faster than a toddler can scream “MUMMMYYY” at 3am.

Welcome to Soak Bathhouse, Alexandria. It’s fresh, it’s chic, it smells divine, and best of all? You can be in and out — blissed out, mind you — in just 90 minutes. Let me take you on a mum-eye-view tour of this dreamy urban retreat and tell you everything I wish I’d known before visiting.

💦 Location, Location, Liberation

The Good: Located in Alexandria, it’s perfectly positioned for Inner West mums to make a proper day of it. Easy enough to get to from Newtown, Marrickville, or Erskineville without feeling like you’re embarking on some epic journey. The 700-square-metre space sits pretty in what feels like an industrial-chic neighbourhood, and parking is available (hallelujah – no circling blocks like a vulture hunting for spaces).

The Reality Check: It’s not exactly around the corner from the Inner West proper, so factor in travel time. If you’re coming from Leichhardt or Balmain, you’re looking at a solid 20-30 minute drive depending on traffic and Sydney’s eternal roadworks situation.

💦 First Impressions: Instagram vs Reality

Walking into Soak Alexandria is like stepping into that friend’s house who somehow has their life together – you know, the one whose kids eat vegetables without negotiating and whose white furniture stays white. The 700-square-metre Sydney bathhouse features luxe stone elements, modern lighting scapes and loads of indoor plants for a serene, stylish atmosphere.

It’s undeniably gorgeous. Think industrial meets zen garden, with enough plants to make your black-thumb guilt flare up momentarily. The lighting is moody but not “fumbling around in the dark trying to find your locker” dim, and the vibe oozes sophisticated relaxation rather than “suburban pool complex.”

But here’s what the Instagram photos don’t tell you: spaces can be lively, especially during peak times (Friday to Sunday), as guests relax and connect in a social setting. Translation? It’s not always the silent, meditation-level tranquility you might expect. Sometimes it’s more “animated whisper-conversations about organic kale” than “profound zen silence.”

💦 What’s Actually Inside the Bathhouse?

You get a 90-minute self-guided session to explore a series of thermal experiences. And mums, let me tell you: this is not just a couple of hot tubs in a pokey room. It’s a full-blown rejuvenation circuit. Here’s what’s on offer:

The Magnesium Pools: These are the main event, and honestly? They deliver. The water feels noticeably different – silkier, if that makes sense. Whether it’s the magnesium or just excellent marketing, my shoulders definitely started unknotting within minutes. The temperature is perfect for that “ahh, I could stay here forever” feeling without turning into a prune immediately.

The Hot Spas (38°C): Hot enough to feel indulgent, not so hot that you’re sweating buckets and questioning your life choices. Perfect for working out those tension knots from carrying car seats, pushing prams up Stanmore Road, and the general physical toll of existing as a mother in 2025.

The Cold Plunge (12.5°C): Now, this is where things get interesting. I’ll be honest – I approached this like I approach most challenges: with excessive confidence followed by immediate regret. The cold plunge is COLD. Like, “did I just accidentally dive into the Antarctic” cold. But – and here’s where I sound like one of those wellness influencers I usually eye-roll – the rush afterwards is genuinely amazing. It’s like your entire nervous system gets a factory reset.

Sauna and Steam: The Sweat Equity

The Dry Cedarwood Sauna: Beautifully crafted, smells incredible, and gets hot enough to make you question why humans voluntarily sit in wooden boxes to sweat. The cedarwood gives it this gorgeous, natural scent that’s more pleasant than those chemical-scented saunas at some gyms. Space-wise, it accommodates about 6-8 people comfortably, which means peak times might involve some strategic timing.

The Steam Room: This is where my curly-haired sisters will either love me or hate me for what I’m about to say – your hair will do things. Unpredictable things. But your skin? Your skin will thank you. It’s like a facial you didn’t have to book six weeks in advance.

Add-On Treatments (if you’ve got more time)

If you can stretch your stay (or wrangle a longer babysitter window), there are extra treats to enjoy:

  • Massages: 45 to 60 minutes of bliss, with skilled therapists and dreamy oils.
  • LED Facials: Quick, light-based facials designed to boost collagen and calm skin.
  • Private Infrared Rooms: If you want to sauna solo or with a friend.

I didn’t do a treatment this time, but it’s on my wish list for next visit. Maybe even a birthday treat (hint-hint to my partner if he ever reads anything I send him).

💦 Do You Need to Talk to Anyone? (Asking for My Social Battery)

Nope. One of the best parts of Soak is that it’s a social wellness space without the pressure to be social. Everyone is doing their own thing — couples, friends, solo bathers, all floating around peacefully. There are no forced group chats, no awkward locker room convos, and no pressure to perform zen. You can arrive with a girlfriend or go solo — both feel totally comfortable.

💦 The Science Bit (Or Is It Just Really Nice Hot Water?)

Look, I’m naturally suspicious of wellness promises, but here’s what the research says versus reality: magnesium apparently helps with muscle soreness and tension when absorbed through your skin – which could explain why my permanently hunched shoulders actually relaxed. The heat therapy supposedly improves circulation and triggers feel-good endorphins, while the cold plunge gets your blood moving.

But honestly? It could just be 90 minutes of enforced phone-free tranquility in a beautiful space. Does it matter if the benefits come from mineral absorption or simply having permission to exist without anyone needing anything from you? Not particularly. Either way, I walked out feeling like a functional human being instead of a walking stress ball.

💦 What to Bring (and What You Can Leave at Home)

Bring:

  • Swimsuit
  • Thongs/slides
  • Water bottle (they have refill stations)
  • Hair tie if you’ve got long hair
  • Toiletries — there’s Sukin body wash in the showers but BYO shampoo and conditioner

Leave:

  • Towels — they provide them!
  • Hairdryer — say goodbye to hauling your GHD around
  • Stress — it’s not invited

For an extra $2.50 you’ll get a locker with a code, so no keys or coins needed. The change rooms are modern and clean and there’s an express swimsuit dryer (I didn’t even know this was a thing), which means you won’t need to come home with a wet patch in your bag.

💦 The Practical Stuff: What It Actually Costs

Soak sessions typically start from around $59, which positions it firmly in the “treat yourself” category rather than “regular Tuesday activity.” For Inner West mums already juggling mortgage stress with organic grocery bills, it’s definitely an investment in your sanity rather than a casual drop-in.

Value Assessment: When you break it down to cost per hour of child-free relaxation, plus the physical and mental benefits, it’s actually reasonable. Compare it to a facial, massage, or even a decent dinner out, and suddenly $59 for 90 minutes of wellness doesn’t seem outrageous.

💦 Booking and Timing: The Strategic Approach

Based on the facility’s popularity and spaces can be lively, especially during peak times (Friday to Sunday), here’s my mum-tested timing advice:

✅ Best times for maximum zen: Tuesday through Thursday, morning sessions. Less crowded, more serene, and you’ll actually feel like you have space to properly relax.

✅ Avoid if you want peace: Friday to Sunday sessions, especially afternoon slots. Great for social vibes, less ideal if you’re seeking meditation-level tranquility.

✅ Booking strategy: Book ahead. This isn’t a “drop in when the stars align” kind of place. Plan it like you would any other essential appointment – because let’s be honest, it should be.

✅ Kid-free zone? YES. Hallelujah. Soak is strictly 16+. This means no splashy toddlers or teenage eye-rolls. Just adults reclaiming a moment of peace.

The Verdict – Should You Go?

YES. One million times yes.

Soak Bathhouse Alexandria is the kind of place that makes wellness feel accessible, not intimidating. You don’t need to be a yoga mum or a wellness guru. You just need 90 minutes and a desire to feel like a human being again.

It’s local, it’s luxe (but not ludicrous), and it fits into a mum’s real-life schedule. Whether you’re solo, with your bestie, or needing a post-school-run recharge, Soak is the bathhouse you didn’t know your soul needed.
