Inner West Mums is the community every mum needs, and the support every mum can count on
OUR STORY
Just three months after arriving in Sydney from London we were excited to find out we were expecting our first baby. I had so many questions about the Aussie health care system, where to buy all those baby essentials, who to have on speed dial when pregnant – but I was pretty much alone. I joined a yoga class and tried to chat with local mums but I was struggling to find answers to all of my questions.
In May 2012 our beautiful baby girl was born, and my mothers group opened the door to beautiful new friendships. As those mums started returning to work, however, I wanted to reach out further. One night I invited a friend over and shared an idea. I wanted to create a virtual mothers group. We both had young children but July 2013, another baby was born – a Facebook group called Inner West Mums (IWMs).
INNER WEST MUMS
I was hoping for a couple of hundred members that lived close by, a network for arranging play dates and snagging tips on great activities for kids or the best local take away.
The group exploded with mums just like me looking to connect. Within a few months we had 2000 members.
Fast-forward two years, and our community has grown to over 30 000 members, from Redfern to Rosehill Gardens. Our area is special. It’s diverse and welcoming of different cultures and backgrounds. IWMs are open, adventurous, have strong voices, are engaged in social and political issues and want to make the best decisions they possibly can for their families (they also need good Netflix reviews). Often they’ve left family and friends back “home” and are making a new start.
I never anticipated the huge response or the work that goes into managing the group (my friend left to spread her wings on other projects) but I have seen the incredible difference we can make to each other’s lives. From a delivery of special formula after all the shops are closed, or a rescue mission for a favourite toy to emergency childcare when a mum is sick, or financial help in times of tragedy, the IWMs community extends far beyond cyberspace.
