Bonfire Bread in Balmain

Bonfire Bread opens in Balmain

The award-winning Bonfire Bread has recently opened on the Darling Street shopping strip in Balmain.

And if the queue out the door during the Inner West Mum’s recent early morning visit is any indication, it’s been a welcome addition to the local area.

It’s the third store from founder Andrew Austin and his team, with the original store opening in Narabeen in 2018, followed by Avalon a year later.  If you love a good loaf of sourdough, this is one to check-out. All the flour and grains used in their loaves are certified organic and in 2019 some were awarded medals at the Sydney Royal Fine Food Show.

There’s an extensive selection of organic sourdoughs produced using traditional methods, alongside spelt and rye, ancient grain blends and specialty loaves, such as kalamata olive and fig and fruit. All bread is made fresh daily on-site.

Bonfire Bread's 48 hour sourdough, served with soup

One of Bonfire Bread’s most popular loaves is the 48-hour fermented organic sourdough (pictured above as we had it, with soup). As with all their organic bread, this loaf is fermented longer with minimal yeast added, which bring out the flavours in the flour. It also gives it a longer shelf-life, without the need for preservatives. Not that we needed it! This loaf was delicious – a day later all we had left were the crumbs.

Spelt flour is used in the cakes and biscuits at Bonfire Bakery

Bonfire Bread also has a daily selection of individual-sized cakes, as well as biscuits, scrolls and tarts. The banana, sticky date and carrot cakes were all on offer when we visited. The kids gobbled them up and I felt good knowing they were made with organic spelt flour.

Bagels are a recent addition, and bags of them were disappearing before my eyes during my visit. The bagels are also fermented for a longer period, giving them a deeper flavour and longer shelf life.

Something to try next time I pop in for a loaf of that amazing sourdough.

Bonfire Bread, 304 Darling Street, Balmain, Monday to Saturday 6am-6pm, Sunday 6am-3pm.
