Canada Bay is another tiny suburb of the inner west with just over a dozen streets making up the entire suburb and over half of these streets cul-de-sacs it makes Canada Bay a quiet area with a lovely suburban feel. However it is conveniently located near the major shopping and dining precincts of Five Dock and Concord. The suburb takes its name from prisoners of the 1837 rebellion in the Canadian Provinces of Ontario and Quebec. The rebellion was quashed by British troops and many of those imprisoned were subsequently sentenced to transportation to Australia. Those that were exiled were considered by some members of the Catholic Church to be the political prisoners of the day due to their role in the uprising in Canada. And as such their imprisonment around the area that is now known as Canada Bay saw much petitioning by these church members for their release. A monument to those exiled was unveiled by the then Canadian prime minister in 1970 in Cabarita Park. The monument was later moved and can now be found in Bayview Park, Concord.
The borders of Canada Bay are made up of Five Dock, Concord and Canada Bay in the Parramatta River, however much of the water foreshore can only be accessed through the suburbs golf course β Barnwell Park Golf Club. Housing in the suburb is typically made up of Federation houses which recently have been popular with renovators who have bought them to modernise for todayβs contemporary living. Newer housing and apartments tend to be located along Regatta Road. Demand far outstrips supply when it comes to housing as there is low turnover with typically only a couple of properties on average being sold a month. While Canada Bay doesnβt have any daycare centres these can be found in nearby Five Dock and Abbotsford along with public primary schools. If youβre travelling to the city no need to take the car as Canada Bay has a regular bus service.
