Geographically most of Chiswick is surrounded by Parramatta River, Abbotsford Bay and Five Dock Bay and bumps up against neighbouring suburbs of Abbotsford and Russell Lea.
Chiswick was originally known by its Aboriginal name Bigi Bigi. When white settlement reached the area Chiswick was part of the encompassing Five Dock Farm until the 1850βs when the lands around Five Dock Farm was sub-divided into smaller estates and it took its name from Chiswick, London which lies along the Thames River.
In the late 1800βs Lysaght Brothers setup a factory to manufacture wire netting. At the time this was a booming industry with farmers desperate to protect their pastures from rabbits which were introduced to Australia in 1859. Lysaghtβs was in operation in Chiswick until 1988. When the plant closed it was demolished and the land repurposed for medium-density housing.
Despite its amazing frontage to Parramatta River Chiswick didnβt attract the grand residences of nearby Drummoyne. This was largely due to its proximity to manufacturing companies (Lysaghtβs and also Nestle manufactured in neighbouring Abbotsford) and also access to the water was difficult due to the steep and rocky terrain along the banks of the river.
Apartment living became prominent in Chiswick in the 1960βs and today housing is made up of the 1960βs apartment blocks along with many newer apartment complexes. As living close to the water has become more desirable the traditional double-brick houses that could once be found with regularity in the suburb are slowly being developed into more modern houses many of which have stunning water views.
Abbotsford has a small group of shops along Blackwall Point Road and Bechert Road. For more substantial dining and shopping options locals usually head to nearby Russell Lea or Five Dock or slightly further down the road is Birkenhead Point shopping centre.
For schooling and education there are a number of daycare and school options around Five Dock and Drummoyne. And if youβre heading into the city thereβs no need to take the car as Chiswick has a regular bus service or if youβd prefer to travel by water head to the Chiswick ferry wharf can take you to Circular Quay or numerous stops in between.
Chiswick has a wonderful array of parks several of which have childrenβs play equipment and BBQ facilities. Possibly the most popular with locals is Chambers Park which has great facilities and its own harbour side pool.
