Three of Drummoyneโs borders are made up of water front. Its fourth border is that of neighbouring Russell Lea. A quick look at a map will show you that as a suburb Drummoyne is split by Victoria Road.
Prior to white settlement the Aboriginal name for the Drummoyne peninsula was Warrembah which means where the sweet waters meet. When settlement took place the areas around Drummoyne were called Drummoyne Park an estate that was owned by William Wright, a local merchant. Wright used his inspiration from his home on the River Clyde, Scotland that was also named Drummoyne Park and it is from here that Drummoyne took its name. In the late 1800โs sub-division of Drummoyne commenced and Drummoyneโs popularity due to its magnificent views and easy transport to the city, via a regular ferry service, was evident as many grand residences were built to capitalise on these factors.
It is for these same reasons that Drummoyne remains so popular today with many of Drummoyneโs locals if not enjoying water views from their homes then appreciating the easy access to Parramatta River and transport links either by ferry or a bus from Victoria Road.
Drummoyne has its own large shopping centre at Birkenhead Point where with 2 major supermarket chains and a number of smaller merchants you can pick up everything you need for your weekly shop. Itโs also home to a number of outlet shops for many well-known fashion brands. And after all that shopping you need a coffee then youโre in luck as there are several cafes to choose from.
Housing today in Drummoyne consists of charming period houses, to apartments that range from your typical 1 bedder to much less typical apartments with magnificent harbour views that will set you back well over $1 million.
Drummoyne is home to 2 primary schools, Drummoyne Public School and St Markโs Catholic Primary School. The suburb also has a number of family daycare, long daycare and preschools.
When it comes to recreation locals of Drummoyne are spoiled for choice with 19 parks in the suburb most of which have water views and many have play equipment and BBQ facilities. In the warmer months be sure to head down to Drummoyne pool for a splash in the fully shaded toddlers pool or do some laps in the heated 50m pool, then sit back and enjoy the amazing vista the pool has over the Iron Cove.
If you fancy something a bit more active then lots of locals take advantage of the famous Bay Run, donโt let its name put you off you can run, walk, cycle even push the pram around this iconic 7km loop around the foreshores of Drummoyne and surrounding suburbs with sustenance found at many cafes along the route.
