Description
Do you know any Stage 3 or high schoolers who love to thrift, love clothes or are generally creative and looking for something new to learn this Easter?
The first of its kind, Flip Fashion Forever is a pilot holiday camp program that teaches 'thrift-flipping', Gen Z's VIRAL version of 'renovating' old clothes.
Look it up on TikTok or just Google and you'll see that billions of young people are making and viewing sewing videos!
Great, right??
The best thing about re-working existing garments?
Not only does it save them from landfill, but it allows neuro diverse students an alternative view of clothes construction, so they can learn how they're made without complex patterns and strict instructions.
Clothes making is the best way to learn the true value of clothes, and the best time to learn it is when confidence is high and standards are low!!!
Notice how many kids stop crafting and start craving fashion in their tweens?
We have gathered some real-life Gen Z ‘influencers’ to help kids switch lanes at this junction, dodging aggressive online marketing and continuing on the road of real-life creativity as they learn to craft and express their personal style.
Flip Fashion Forever - Monday 14 April to Thursday 17 April, 9am-3pm
**Choose between two and four days**
How does it work?
- Participants source project starters from the event's partnering ‘thrift store’, Re Place, at the Inner West Sustainability Hub in Summer Hill
- The Hub’s Green Living Centre will be equipped with circularly sourced sewing machines and supplies
- Participants are empowered to be their own creative directors; how can they flip an existing item into something they would be proud to wear?
- At least four talented and socially responsible Gen Z mentors will be available as guides throughout the camp. These range from students to emerging fashion designers, some of whom have had their work featured in Vogue and at Australian Fashion Week
- Participants will learn sewing machine, hand sewing and garment construction basics by seam-ripping and re-working thrifted clothing
We hope to create an inclusive, creative space for young people to explore fashion as a VERB (‘to fashion’) instead of an unethical, wasteful industry, in a non-judgmental, open-minded and youth-led environment.
Cost includes $20 Thrift Vouchers to be spent at Re Place, where items average at $5-10 per item, as well as take-home supplies for any unfinished projects.
