Description

Everyone loves an end-of-year, neighbourhood street party and the team behind Goolay'yari Sounds are here to deliver - making their mark with an exciting, community-led music festival in the Inner West. With an impressive line-up of artists from around the Cooks River / Goolay'yari, the festival hopes to raise awareness of the health of the River and what people can do to aid its recovery.

From Inner West icons Dog Trumpet led by brothers Reg Mombassa and Peter O'Doherty from Hall of Fame band Mental as Anything to Marrickville High School Year 8 Rock Band. The acoustic serenades of Indigenous Australian band Stiff Gins with Kaleena Briggs and Nardi Simpson are met with the healing heart of Malaika Mfalme. Local artists The Minties, House of Monkeys, and performers Suzie Mathers and Nina Carmen will also be making waves on the day.

The Cooks River / Goolay’yari has a complex and sordid history, and is often known as the river that “died of shame”. Through the music fostered by local creatives in the Inner West and neighbouring communities, we celebrate the Sounds of the Goolay’yari.

Mapo ice cream bus will be rolling up to keep you cool, and nature-based arts and crafts activities will keep the little ones busy.

So pack a picnic, slip, slop, slap and join us on 14 December near the river itself, nestled among the towering gums on the iconic Marrickville Golf Course from 2:30pm.
