Did you know that the average Aussie household throws out more than 4kgs of food waste each week? This adds up to over 2.5million tonnes of food in our bins annually and organic material is close to half of what most families throw out. In NSW it’s estimated this costs families up to $965 each week!
In a bid to decrease the amount of food rotting in landfill, releasing methane into the environment and contributing to climate change, the Inner West Council will be rolling out full Food and Garden Waste Recycling in every household this October.
The new food recycling program will include:
🌿 A weekly collection of the green bin from houses for food and garden waste
🌿 In September, a green topped kitchen caddy will be delivered to every house in the Inner West
🌿 A comprehensive education program to be rolled out leading up to the scheme which starts in October – and they’re on the lookout for Community Champions (see below)
🌿 A continuation of the existing scheme for apartment blocks where a burgundy food recycling bin is collected weekly
To raise awareness of this exciting initiative, Inner West Council are looking for community champions to share their knowledge and help actively engage the community in the food recycling program.
