Getting to know: Dr Priyanka Anand from Balmain Village Health

Dr Priyanka Anand recently joined Balmain Village Health and is loving the area so much she is thinking of moving there. Find out what she loves about being a GP and how a gratitude journal is helping her stay grounded during this current Covid-19 lockdown.

Tell us a little bit about yourself

My name is Priyanka Anand and I work as GP at both Balmain Village Health and the Inner West Respiratory Clinic.

I grew up in Hong Kong and Singapore but finally settled in Sydney, where I completed my Medical Degree.

My hobbies/interests are travelling, reading and spending time with my toy cavoodle Henry. For exercise I enjoy F45 and pilates.

What do you love most about what you do?

What I love most about general practice is being able to connect with and serve our community, getting to know my patients holistically and assisting them achieve their health goals.

What path led you to choosing this career?

I chose general practice because I love spending time with people, listening to their stories and problem solving my way through a very complex and fascinating human body/mind.

Do you have any special areas of interest as a GP? What appeals to you most about these areas?

I enjoy working in women’s health and paediatrics which is why I have done additional training, completing a Diploma of Children’s Health.

I am also doing further study in dermoscopy.

Are there any mindfulness techniques or practices you use to stay grounded during difficult times, like this current lockdown?

During this gruelling lockdown I have made a conscious effort to appreciate life’s simple pleasures such as cooking a fun meal with family. I also keep a gratitude diary and write down five things I am grateful for daily.

What’s been your favourite book of 2021 so far? And what will you be reading next?

I just finished reading Becoming by Michelle Obama and I honestly could not admire or respect her more for her deep care for her family but also her community and country.

I love a good thriller and am looking for a good recommendation – please reach out if you have any.

Favourite places in the inner west?

Still figuring out the inner west but I cannot speak more highly of the vibe in the Balmain community  – so much so I am considering moving here!
