Getting to Know … Liv Banks of Fluro Fitness

Liv Banks is the Founder and Director of Fluro Fitness, an Inner West-based Personal Training business. Liv is a fully qualified fitness instructor, with over eight years in the fitness industry who doesn’t believe in a ‘one size fits all’ approach and will design training programs to meet her client’s needs. Best of all, Liv remembers what it is like for those that are new to exercise, or lapsed exercisers and is ready to motivate you to get you started on your path to a healthier you!


Tell us a little about yourself
I grew up in Russia and when I was growing up, I wasn’t sporty at all! After moving to Australia, I started getting into running, as a way to keep fit. At first, I couldn’t jog a whole circuit, but after a few months of pushing myself and trying, I finally did it! I’ll never forget the exhilarating feeling of that achievement. That gave me the confidence to start trying out other things at the gym even though I had no idea what I was actually doing! So, yes, this PT was once a complete newbie at the gym!

At first, I just liked the way exercise made me look but the more I discovered and learned, the health benefits became the main reason. Being a mother and a woman in her late 30s, I can’t imagine what my life would be like now, if I did not have this incredible passion for a healthy and fit lifestyle.


What did you do prior to setting up Fluro Fitness?
I was working in optometry, so very different to fitness. I was in the middle of setting up my own business when I realised that glasses didn’t interest me in the slightest and I much preferred to move, meet new people and teach them to move for life. I took action and decided to leave optometry to set up my own fitness venture. To say it was a challenge to start my own business, alone, is an understatement. But it was absolutely worth it.


What motivated you to become a Personal Trainer?

I want every woman and every mum out there to have the option to feel the way I feel because of what an active lifestyle gave me and what it can give them. The active lifestyle can give women confidence and help them feel strong. For mothers, the added benefit is that these qualities can also inspire their little ones too.

The strength it gave me through pregnancy and the ability to bounce back so quickly after childbirth, is immeasurable. Being able to chase after my little daughter Andrea (a runner and thrill-seeker), is more valuable than any abs or toned legs. I now have the strength to lift her and rock her without suffering from back pain. And most importantly I am showing her how important it is to take care of yourself.

  • My free Facebook group “From Bump to Bikini” for mums only where I share workouts, nutritional tips and at home fitness challenges for mums who can’t get to the gym


What is the most inspiring experience you’ve had with a client?
When one of my favourite clients – who had gone through depression and the menopause – told me that she no longer needed blood pressure medication or antidepressants because of our work together. That was the moment I realised that this is exactly what I am meant to be doing. Words can’t describe the feeling of joy I had for her.

The team at Fluro Fitness have been fortunate to have had many moments like this where our clients have had fantastic, life-altering results. It just makes you want to do a happy dance.


What has been the highlight of your career so far?
Meeting some amazing and wonderful people, and watching them achieve incredible things that they never thought they could. Like coaching one mum of two toddlers to have the confidence to compete in a fitness competition, see her step on the stage so proudly in her bikini and take two medals home to show her children. And of course, working with my incredible team that I am so grateful for, Mika, Sasha and Klaudia.


What advice can you offer busy mums wanting to improve their health and fitness?
Remember that taking care of your health is not selfish. It is selfish not to do so because your kids need you strong, healthy and most importantly, sane!


Favorite places in the Inner West?
Rocco’s Café @ Five Dock, Dear Delicious Dulwich Hill, Lab Kitchen Five Dock, Hide & Seek Café Leichhardt. Humming Bird Sweet Things Store in Wareemba, for gifts and really cute girls dresses, our Five Dock group classes and of course going for a stroll or a jog with the pram along the bay run.


What/who inspires you?
Firstly, my mum. She made incredible sacrifices as a single mum and taught me to be strong and resilient without preaching, leading by example and just soldiering on when things get tough.

I love listening to Chalene Johnson at the moment, she has two podcast channels, one for women in general talking about life, marriage, kids, sex, nutrition and another channel for business.

Our wonderful trainer Mika, is a single mum who came from Serbia a long time ago with no family and the incredible things she does for our clients whilst being a super-mum to her 12 year old son. I am so glad we met and can work together helping other mums find their confidence again like we have.
