Little BIG House in Summer Hill opened its doors last July and has been steadily growing its community services to meet the needs of residents in the Inner West Local Government Area.
It was established and is funded by EG Developments who is responsible for the large residential development on the Mungo Scott flour mill site. The Foundation’s aim is to support mental wellbeing through belonging. It hopes to create a space where people can connect and meet their neighbours, leading to less loneliness and a happier, healthier community.
The double story premises is available to hire for children’s birthday parties and other functions. As well as operating as a drop-in centre for locals and a venue for regular neighbourhood events from live music to yoga classes. Volunteers staff the drop-in space at various points throughout the week – check the website for the latest days and times (at the time of publication this is every Sunday from 10am to 1pm). There are toilets with baby change facilities; a kitchenette with a fridge and microwave; a kids corner (pictured above) with low tables, colouring in, toys and games; and a community library.
It looks like a great space for a mother’s group catch up, with plenty of green space outside for the warmer months. It can be reserved for a community event, or something like a regular mother’s group catch-up, for a $2 donation to the Foundation.
Or pop along to its weekly parents group every Tuesday from 9am to 10.30am for a playdate with other Summer Hill locals.
The site also opens as a drop-in safe space on Fridays and Saturdays, 5.30pm to 9pm, for people feeling alone and in need of connection.
Stay connected while working from home
The space recently opened on Mondays for co-working. This is a free drop-in service running every Monday from 9am to 5pm for locals wanting a break from their home-office environment. The site can accommodate approximately 15-20 people on a big dining table, a couch and counters along the walls.
Get creative, with the support of others
A Summer Hill local hosts a writing space on-site every second Tuesday from 7pm to 9pm for those seeking support and motivation as they work on a writing project. All are welcome, regardless of experience.
Other regular events include a monthly, free, self-care workshop run by a kinesiologist, a chai catch up run by a local business, and free exercise classes (yoga and cardio) by Live Life Get Active in Harvest Park.
