Darrell Jackson Gardens playgrounds, Summer Hill

At Inner West Mums we’re big fans of parks which cater for kids of all ages and Darrell Jackson Gardens is one such park. There’s tennis courts, a basketball hoop and a skate park for the older kids. A fenced playground for toddlers and preschoolers. And the new wooden equipment, which was recently upgraded by Inner West Council. This suits older preschoolers and primary school aged kids.

Where is it?

Darrell Jackson Gardens is a large green space a short walk from Summer Hill shops and about a 10-minute walk from the train station. One of its’ two playgrounds was re-done by Inner West Council as part of an $800,000 upgrade in 2022. This also included upgrading the tennis courts and the installation of a new junior cricket wicket.

What’s the playground like?

There are two playgrounds on-site. The fenced playground (pictured above) for younger children remains as-is. It includes swings, lower to the ground monkey bars and four slides. Part of this playground is covered by a shade cloth.

The recently upgraded wooden playground (pictured above, below and at top of page) includes a nest swing, two small in-ground trampolines, an obstacle course and small slide structure with a spiderweb climbing wall. There are nature play elements nearby such as sandstone blocks for jumping off or hiding behind, and large logs for balancing.

Any other facilities for families?

A new covered picnic table and barbecue have been installed near the new playground equipment as part of the upgrade. Also on-site is a skate park, tennis courts and additional picnic tables. The tennis courts are free to use and do not require a booking. According to a local IWM member, there are toilets too.
