PNDA Awareness Week Information Night with Inner West Mums

Time: 12 November 2019 from 6.30 pm-8.30 pm (Information session will begin at 7.15 pm.)

Location: Balmain Sailing Club, Water Street, Birchgrove

Did you know that one of five expecting or new parents is diagnosed with perinatal (antenatal or postnatal) depression or anxiety? Although much has been done in recent times in regard to raising awareness of mental health issues, the stigma that surrounds mental illness still stops many individuals from seeking help. Far too many expecting or new parents suffer alone and in silence or leave their illness untreated for too long because they feel they’ll be judged for not being a ‘perfect’ parent.

November 11-19 marks Perinatal Depression and Anxiety (or PNDA) Awareness Week. On the evening of November 12, for the third time, Inner West Mums will run an information session to increase understanding of perinatal depression and anxiety.

Our guest panellists will include Dr Sue Acton, a GP from Balmain Health Village, who has a particular interest in working with women’s mental and postnatal health, and Elizabeth Neal of Elizabeth Neal Psychology, who specialises in relationships and how relationships impact us as individuals. In addition we’ll also have two brave Inner West Mums who will share their personal journeys with PNDA. During the evening we’ll cover risk factors, causes, signs and symptoms of PND, treatment and self-care.

The main aim of this event is to encourage parents to be able to be open and honest, with themselves and those around them, about how they are coping with the shift to becoming a parent, to understand what is a normal part of the journey and what is not, and if they need help, to reach out.

You and your partners are both invited, or you can come solo, or you can just send your partner along. Our events are very warm and engaging.

The cost per ticket is $15. Any profit from the ticket sales will go towards our Christmas Food Drive to buy much-needed grocery vouchers for the Asylum Seekers Centre in Newtown. We’ll provide some pizza on arrival and a sweet treat as well as a drink for every guest. Secure your ticket here.

The event will start at 6.30 pm with some time for guests to grab a drink and a bite to eat and meet others in our community. The discussion will start at 7.15 pm.

Many thanks to the two professionals who are giving their time to raise awareness of this important cause. Thanks also to Inner West Mums’ sponsors – Baker Developments, Canale Tax and Accounting, Gowland Legal and Guardian Childcare and Education – for their ongoing support.

Hope to see you there!
