This week – after three long years – Shark Beach at Nielsen Park, Vaucluse reopened to the public.
The popular Eastern harbour beach had been closed since early 2022 after the 100-year-old seawall was damaged in a storm. The reconstruction of the seawall, initially set for completion in December 2022, was delayed several times due to bad weather and building issues.
We visited Shark Beach today to find locals are wasting no time in returning to their favourite seaside haunt.
The new seawall will provide lots of space for chilling by the water once the new turf has been established. And a brand-new shark net has been erected to, well, keep the sharks out and the swimmers in!
Another welcome change is the reopening of beachside The Kiosk at The Nielsen which was bustling when we visited. The coffee was excellent, and to our surprise only $4.50 a cup. The Kiosk is open from 7 am to 7 pm Monday to Sunday and serves a broad range of food and beverages.
There are plenty of shady spots in the grassed areas to relax with a picnic. There is also a short foreshore walk for those looking to stretch their legs.
Parking is available in Greycliffe Avenue, including several disabled spaces. Alternatively, you can take the 325 bus route from Circular Quay.
