A Day at Parsley Bay

Is this Sydney’s most family friendly beach?

Looking for a family friendly beach? One with a tranquil waters so your little ones can take a dip without being knocked over by strong waves? One with picnic facilities and even a playground? Parsley Bay could be your new family beach destination. Nestled between the iconic beaches of Bondi and Coogee, Parsley Bay feels worlds away from the crowds. With its calm waters, lush greenery and low-key vibe, it’s just what a ‘relaxing day at the beach’ looks like. Here’s everything you need to know about this gorgeous family destination, and why it should be at the top of your list for a family beach day in Sydney.

Location, Location, Location.

Situated in the postcard-perfect suburb of Vaucluse, Parsley Bay is a small, secluded beach that hugs the edge of Sydney Harbour. It’s part of the Parsley Bay Reserve – a pocket of land on Sydney’s foreshore which turn-of-the-century Sydneysiders had the foresight to protect from over development. Whilst the car park was being renovated at the time of our visit, we found street parking quite easily but for those wanting a car-free day out, Parsley Bay is also a short bus ride from Bondi Junction.

Depending on which way you enter, you’ll cross a 100-year-old suspension bridge which young thrill seekers love to jump off at high tide (eh-hem), or meander down the steps through bushland. Once you step foot in the park, you’re greeted with lush greenery, the soft gentle waves lapping against the shore, and the stunning blue of Sydney Harbour. If it feels like you’ve discovered a hidden treasure, you’re not wrong – and best of all, it’s far less crowded than its more well-known neighbouring beaches.

The Beach: Small, Safe, and Perfect for Little Ones

What makes Parsley Bay so great for families is its small, sheltered beach. Protected by surrounding rock walls, which not only helps to keep the water calm but also gives the beach a sense of seclusion, Parsley Bay boasts tranquil, shallow waters where little ones can paddle, splash around, and swim without the worry of strong waves or currents. Plus, the soft, fine sand is just right for unleashing your creativity – sandcastle challenge anyone?

And at just 150 metres in length – compared to Bondi’s whopping 1 kilometre stretch of sand – Parsley Bay is the type of beach where you can easily keep an eye on the kids whether they’re toddling on the sand or diving in as confident swimmers.

Want more from your day than just a dip in the water?

One of the things visitors love most about Parsley Bay is the way it combines beach fun with green space – especially if you have kids with the attention span of a goldfish and who get bored after a quick dip! Right behind the beach, you’ll find a large, grassy area that’s perfect for picnics. Whether you’re bringing a picnic basket brimming with treats or grabbing takeaway from the on-site cafe (more on that in a bit), this spot is ideal for relaxing and letting the kids run free. There are also plenty of shady spots under the trees, so you can set up your blanket and settle in for the day.

Plus, the large, well-maintained playground is a big hit with kids of all ages – think swings, climbing structures and slides, so your little and not-so-little ones can burn off some energy while you kick back and enjoy the view. Best of all, it’s located under large, shady trees so the kids can still play even during the hottest part of the day.

Café and Refreshments

For those days when packing lunch just doesn’t seem appealing, Parsley Bay Cafe has you covered. From wagyu rump sambos, croissants with melted cheese and ham, burgers and bacon and egg rolls, there’s light bites and bigger meals for every appetite. And if you’re looking for a more substantial meal or a different kind of dining experience, there are plenty of cafés and restaurants in the nearby suburb of Vaucluse, offering a variety of dining options just a short drive away. But for those who prefer to stay close to the sand, the Parsley Bay café is a perfect place to relax and refuel during a busy day at the beach.

Explore the Surrounding Reserve

Whilst the beach and picnic area will probably keep the fam entertained for hours, there’s more to explore in the surrounding Parsley Bay Reserve. For families who enjoy a little bit of adventure, the reserve features several walking tracks that wind through lush, bushland areas and offer scenic views of Sydney Harbour. The paths are mostly flat and easily accessible, making them stroller-friendly, so even the youngest members of the family can join in.

One of the highlights of the area is the footbridge that crosses over Parsley Bay, providing a great spot for kids to watch the water below or look out towards the Harbour Bridge in the distance.

Facilities

Forget heading home with sand in your pants! There’s an outdoor shower for a quick wash or enclosed showers in the toilet block near the car park.
