From hot ricotta and deli panini to wood-fired pizza and old-school gelato, these local favourites offer a taste of Italy without leaving the Inner West.
Ferragosto is taking over Five Dock this August, and we’re embracing all things la dolce vita.
On Sunday 16 August 2026, Great North Road will be packed with Italian food, live entertainment, cooking demonstrations, free rides, a petting zoo and enough Italian-Australian energy to power a small village.
Can’t make it on the day, or not ready for the festivities to end? The Inner West is brimming with ways to keep the celebration going, from hot ricotta and stacked deli panini to wood-fired pizza, kids’ cooking classes and old-school gelato.
No passport required. Just bring an appetite.

Five Dock
A visit to Raineri’s Continental Delicatessen is the edible equivalent of being told you look too thin and immediately handed lunch.
This old-school Five Dock institution has been serving the local community for more than 30 years, with shelves stacked with the essentials of a well-stocked Italian kitchen. Think pasta, biscuits, sauces and olive oil, alongside counters filled with salumi, cheeses, olives and other antipasti favourites.
Ask the team for their recommendations and you may be treated to a taste or two before making your final selection. From aged pecorino and prosciutto to fresh olives and cold-cut meats, it is almost impossible to leave empty-handed.
And don’t skip the panino. Let the staff guide the fillings, then find somewhere nearby to tackle a sandwich that may require both hands, several napkins and a temporary suspension of conversation.
Find it: 97 Great North Road, Five Dock
Best for: A traditional Italian deli experience and a serious lunchtime sandwich

Marrickville
Few phrases inspire such immediate happiness as “freshly made ricotta”.
Producing Italian cheese in Marrickville since 1962, Paesanella has become a cornerstone of Sydney’s Italian food scene. Its locally made range includes ricotta, bocconcini, mozzarella and burrata, alongside imported cheeses and an impressive selection of Italian pantry staples.
Wander through the food emporium and you’ll also find cured meats, pasta, sauces, olives and enough antipasti supplies to turn a casual afternoon snack into a full family spread.
Long-time devotees know to arrive early for the hot ricotta, made fresh in the factory and snapped up quickly by shoppers who know exactly what they’re doing. Consider this your warning: the nonnas are fast, focused and unlikely to surrender the final tub.
Find it: 150–152 Marrickville Road, Marrickville
Best for: Fresh Italian cheese, antipasti supplies and a very productive pantry restock

Haberfield
Some family dinners require negotiations worthy of an international summit. Pizza night at La Disfida is considerably easier.
This Haberfield favourite serves the kind of Italian food designed to be placed in the middle of the table and enthusiastically shared. Order several pizzas, add a pasta or a few starters, and let everyone reach, swap and quietly compete for the final slice.
The lively dining room has all the clatter and warmth you want from a neighbourhood Italian restaurant, while the menu gives both traditionalists and more adventurous eaters plenty to choose from.
It is also a forgiving choice for families. There’s enough buzz to absorb the occasional dropped fork, while takeaway is available for nights when getting everyone dressed and out the door feels wildly ambitious.
Weekend bookings are a smart move.
Find it: 109 Ramsay Street, Haberfield
Best for: A relaxed family pizza night with proper neighbourhood-trattoria atmosphere

Leichhardt
Here is a school-holiday activity with an unusually delicious end product.
During La Botte D’Oro’s kids’ pizza cooking classes, young chefs stretch their own dough, choose their toppings and watch their creations bake in an authentic wood-fired oven.
While the kids are busy getting flour on almost every available surface, parents can settle in for a relaxed Italian lunch featuring shared dishes, focaccia and fresh pasta. Everybody wins.
Each child’s ticket includes the hands-on pizza class, their finished pizza, a drink and a scoop of gelato. Sessions are held during selected school holidays and are designed primarily for primary-school-aged children, although younger and older children may also join with a parent nearby.
Bookings are essential, so check upcoming dates before promising the kids their new career as professional pizzaioli.
La Botte D’Oro has been part of Leichhardt’s Italian dining community since 1977 and also serves handmade pasta and wood-fired pizza, should the children’s creation awaken everyone’s appetite rather than satisfy it.
Find it: 137 Marion Street, Leichhardt
Best for: A hands-on family activity where lunch is built into the entertainment

Haberfield and Leichhardt
Choosing between ricotta cheesecake and gelato is an unnecessary test of character. Have both.
Begin at Pasticceria Papa in Haberfield, where the glass cabinets groan under the weight of cannoli, biscuits, pastries and celebration cakes.
Its baked ricotta cake is the headline act: creamy, delicately sweet and beloved well beyond the Inner West. Order a slice to eat immediately, then convince yourself that buying a whole cake for later is simply good planning.
Next, head to Bar Italia on Norton Street for an old-school Leichhardt gelato stop. Grab a cone, take a stroll and enjoy one of the few family outings where sticky fingers are not merely tolerated but inevitable.
Bar Italia also serves pizza, pasta and coffee, making it particularly handy when a dessert mission unexpectedly expands into dinner.
Find them: Pasticceria Papa, 145 Ramsay Street, Haberfield; Bar Italia, 171 Norton Street, Leichhardt
Best for: Ricotta cake, cannoli and a post-dinner gelato wander

Ferragosto may transform Five Dock for one lively Sunday, but the Inner West’s Italian food culture is built for year-round enjoyment.
Start with the festival, then keep the celebration rolling with a deli raid, a family pizza night and enough ricotta and gelato to make August feel considerably more Mediterranean.
The airfare fund can wait 🇮🇹🍕🍨
