Sydney Stargazing Event for teens and families

This Stargazing Night at the Botanic Gardens Looks Like the Perfect Outing for Parents + Tweens or Teens ✨

Finding activities that genuinely appeal to older kids can be surprisingly difficult. Too old for playgrounds, too young for most adult events, and increasingly impossible to impress.

Which is exactly why Astronomy at the Calyx at the Royal Botanic Garden Sydney stands out.

Designed for adults and children aged 12+, this after-dark experience combines astronomy, immersive storytelling and telescope viewing into one very memorable winter night out. And honestly? It feels tailor-made for curious tweens, space-obsessed teens and parents who’d happily swap another family movie night for something a little more extraordinary.

Held inside The Calyx, the evening is led by celebrated astrophysicist Dr Ángel López-Sánchez, who guides guests through everything from distant exoplanets and dark energy to exploding stars and galaxy evolution in a way that’s fascinating rather than overly technical.

Then comes the real highlight.

Guests head outdoors for guided stargazing with powerful telescopes operated by volunteers from the Northern Sydney Astronomical Society, offering the chance to view planets, stars and deep-space objects above Sydney’s winter sky. For kids already deep in their “space phase”, this is the kind of experience they’ll talk about for weeks afterwards. 🔭

There’s also something refreshingly easy about the whole setup for parents. The event runs in the evening, includes a grazing box and complimentary wine for adults, and doesn’t require a huge amount of planning beyond getting everyone into the car on time.
