Vivid Sydney 2025: The Best Kid-Friendly Events for Families
Sydney’s biggest, brightest, most beloved winter festival is back – and it’s pulling out all the stops. Vivid Sydney 2025 (running May 23 to June 14) is lighting up the city with a reimagined festival footprint, a stack of interactive light installations, free gigs, big ideas, and fiery feasts. And the best part? Much of it is free, making it the ultimate low-budget, high-impact night out with the kids.
If you’re looking to break your kids out of the winter screen slump and into a world of wonder, here are the must-do family-friendly highlights of Vivid Sydney 2025.
🔦 Light Walk Legends
Let’s be real – this is what you’re here for. Vivid’s Light Walk is a glowing treasure trail winding through The Rocks, Barangaroo, Darling Harbour and beyond. This year, it’s all about interactivity: think voice-activated animations, giant light-up swings, whimsical seesaws, and even a tennis match made of light. Want to plan your route? Click here for the Vivid Light Walk Map.
Here are two major installations you won’t want to miss:
A cluster of glowing, cloud-like structures floats like a dream straight out of a picture book — or in this case, Burning Man. This international favourite, created by a U.S.-based team, makes its Vivid debut with swings suspended under illuminated clouds.
Still = glowing white. In motion = dazzling bursts of colour.
It’s simple, stunning, and pure magic for kids and grown-ups alike.
Brand new for 2025, Colour the City brings the Vivid spirit to unexpected places, transforming Sydney’s everyday infrastructure into surprise spectacles. Think: phone booths that glow, bus stops that blink, and even buildings that pulse with light when you walk past.
It’s part scavenger hunt, part street art safari — and a great way to keep kids engaged between major installations.
📍 Look out for hidden gems in all five Vivid zones
Also on the bill:
Kiss of Light – The Opera House sails get a bold, rainbow-hued makeover with artwork by the late David McDiarmid.
House of Romance – Fashion-meets-fantasy at Customs House via Sydney label Romance Was Born.
Community Projections – Submit your kid’s artwork for a chance to see it projected onto The Rocks’ ASN Co. Building Clock Tower. But be quick – entries close 30 April. Click here for more info.
📍 Pro tip: Start at The Goods Line and work your way toward Darling Harbour to beat the crowds and keep little legs walking.

Got a tween or a Netflix-obsessed teen? This is the pick. A walk-through adventure packed with ’80s nostalgia, supernatural twists and mega-cool set design. You’ll explore iconic scenes from Hawkins, Indiana — with enough eerie glow and special effects to satisfy even the most screen-hardened child.
📍 Recommended for: Ages 10+ or brave younger kids. And yes, parents will low-key love it too.

Vivid Music’s Tumbalong Nights returns to Darling Harbour with a big line-up of free, all-ages concerts. It’s global, it’s diverse, and it’s outdoors — which means your little ones can groove to Afro beats, V-Pop, and First Nations anthems without needing to sit still or stay quiet.
This year’s line-up includes:
Mỹ Anh and Chi Xê – V-Pop stars with big energy.
Dobet Gnahoré – A Grammy-winning powerhouse from Côte d’Ivoire.
Local legends Winston Surfshirt and Ayesha Madon bringing feel-good beats.
🧺 Grab a spot on the grass, bring some snacks, and let them dance their hearts out.

🐨 Firetalk at Barangaroo: Stories Worth Staying Up For
Wind down the night with First Nations storytelling by firelight at Barangaroo Reserve. These weekly Firetalk sessions are gentle, powerful, and a peaceful contrast to the festival’s sensory overload. Bring a blanket, soak in the stars, and listen to ancient stories told the way they were meant to be.
🌿 Ideal for ages 5+, or younger kids with bedtime flexibility.
