Best School Holiday Activity in Sydney: Asia Live 2026 at Haymarket

Asia Live 2026: Where Culture, Light + Play Collide (In the Best Way) 🌸✨

By mid–school holidays, even the best playground starts to lose its sparkle. If you’re ready to mix things up — without overcomplicating your life — Asia Live 2026 is the kind of outing that makes you feel like you’ve made an effort (even if you haven’t really 😉).

For 16 days, Haymarket transforms into a glowing cultural playground — part light installation, part street festival, part dinner plan. No booking, no rigid schedule… just turn up, wander and leave when you need.

Running 3–19 April, it’s the kind of outing that feels different to your usual park/playground loop — with just enough “wow” to make it worth the effort.

🌟 The standout: THE SANCTUARY (4–18 April)

The Sanctuary is an illuminated, walk-through installation designed as a cultural journey through Asia — and it’s built perfectly for kids who like to explore rather than sit still.

Created by artist Yudi Loefti (with an official anthem by Vinh Van Lam), it blends light, sculpture and storytelling into something that feels part garden, part night-time adventure.

Kids can spot:

  • Japan’s Maneki Neko (lucky cat)
  • Indonesia’s Barong
  • Korea’s Magpie & Tiger
  • China’s Shi Shi Lion

It’s immersive without being overwhelming — best suited to ages 3–12, but older kids will still get into it (especially once food is involved).

🌺 Walk the “Flowers of Asia” trail

Threaded through The Sanctuary are the “Flowers of Asia” ceremonial gates, each representing a different region through floral symbolism.

One standout is the Hibiscus gate 🌺

  • Known as Bunga Raya (“celebration flower”)
  • A symbol of unity, courage and life

There are even little prompts and quiz-style moments woven in, which turn it into a low-key learning experience without it feeling like one.

🎭 Big energy moments: Super Stage + performances

On 4 April and 18 April (6–9pm), the Super Stage brings the energy with large-scale performances across Dixon and Little Hay Streets.

Across the full 16 days, you’ll also catch:

  • Roaming performers
  • Cultural showcases
  • Music and dance that kids can dip in and out of

Translation: no pressure to sit still — you can engage as much (or as little) as works for your crew.

🍜 Dinner = sorted (and the Food Trail makes it easy)

This is where it really works for parents.

Haymarket and nearby Darling Square turn into a full street food + casual dining hub, but during Asia Live it goes one step further with a curated Asia Live Food Trail that makes the whole “where should we eat?” question much easier.

The trail is grouped into fun, easy-to-follow categories including Milk N’ Sugar for dessert stops, Rice Is Life for hearty meal options, I Love Noodles for slurp-worthy favourites, Up in Smoke for BBQ and grilled flavours, and Spice Wars for bolder tastes. The festival also spotlights trail themes like Indonesia, Tea & Coffee, and Snack Out, so you can choose your route depending on your mood, hunger level or how adventurous your kids are feeling. (

In practical terms, it means less decision fatigue and more “let’s just follow the trail.” You can keep it simple with dumplings or noodles, build in a dessert stop, or turn dinner into part of the activity itself.

There’s also a Spend & Win where you can win $10k worth of cash and prizes, so your dinner receipt could double as a prize entry.

💡 Worth noting: entry is free, but you’ll likely spend on food, so this works well as a school holiday dinner-out plan.

🚶‍♀️ The practical bits

  • Getting there: 5-minute walk from Central or Haymarket Light Rail — skip the car
  • Pram-friendly: Wide, walkable streets
  • Facilities: Easy access to bathrooms and seating around Darling Square
  • Timing: Allow 60–90 minutes to explore, longer if you stay for dinner or performances
  • Best time to go:
    • Weeknights = a little calmer
    • Weekends = more buzz (and more people)

✨ Make it feel a bit magical

Arrive just before sunset.

Let the kids explore while it’s still light, grab an early dinner, then watch as the installations switch on and the whole precinct starts to glow. It’s that sweet spot where everything feels a little bit special… and no one’s melting down yet.
