Australia’s biggest secondhand treasure hunt is back for two weekends this November, and this year it’s the final hurrah. Here’s how Inner West families can turn unwanted clutter into cash, discover brilliant bargains and enjoy a little neighbourhood adventure.

Got a cupboard full of toys the kids have outgrown? A wardrobe bursting with clothes you haven’t worn in years? Or perhaps you’re the sort of person who can’t walk past a garage sale without wondering what treasures might be hiding inside?
Clear your calendar (and possibly your garage), because Garage Sale Trail returns on 7–8 and 14–15 November 2026, bringing thousands of garage sales, secondhand markets and bargain hunters together across Australia.
And this year comes with a twist. After 16 years of helping Australians turn their unwanted belongings into someone else’s treasures, 2026 marks the final Garage Sale Trail organised by the Garage Sale Trail Foundation.
For Inner West families, it’s a great excuse to declutter before Christmas, make a little extra money or spend a morning exploring neighbourhood sales with the kids. Think vintage clothes, pre-loved toys, books, homewares, furniture and those unexpected finds you never knew you needed.
Best of all? It’s completely free to participate.

Garage Sale Trail is Australia’s biggest secondhand treasure hunt, with more than 330,000 Australians participating each year.
Over two weekends, homes, apartment buildings, schools, community groups and local organisations transform their driveways, gardens and shared spaces into pop-up marketplaces.
Since launching in Bondi in 2010, the initiative has grown into a nationwide event, helping Australians give more than 7.2 million pre-loved items a second life while generating $52 million for households, community groups and charities.
It’s about more than finding a bargain. Garage Sale Trail encourages people to buy secondhand, reduce waste and connect with their neighbours.
And if there’s one thing the Inner West does well, it’s a good community event with a side of vintage shopping.
If you’ve been meaning to tackle the overflowing toy cupboard, clear out the kids’ wardrobes or finally part with that exercise equipment gathering dust, consider this your sign.
Garage Sale Trail makes it easy to host your own sale, whether you’ve got an entire garage to clear or just a few boxes of things you no longer need.
According to the organisers, the average household garage sale made $761 in 2025, while community groups, schools and charities averaged more than $1,325.
Not bad for a weekend spent clearing some space!
Registering a sale is free and takes around five minutes. You’ll receive a listing on the national Garage Sale Trail map, promotional materials and practical tips to help attract shoppers.
You can host on one day or across multiple days during the two event weekends.

Living in an apartment or terrace doesn’t mean you have to miss out.
You can team up with neighbours, organise a shared sale in your apartment building (with the necessary permissions), join an existing group sale or get a few families together for a bigger neighbourhood event.
It’s also a fantastic fundraising opportunity for school P&Cs, sporting clubs and community groups.

Not quite ready to part with your possessions? You can join the fun as a shopper instead.
Garage Sale Trail is a brilliant way to spend a weekend morning with the kids, especially if you’re looking for something inexpensive to do together.
Give everyone a small budget, choose a few neighbourhoods to explore and see what you can find.

For older kids, it’s also a chance to practise budgeting, compare prices and learn that something doesn’t need to be brand new to be worth having.
Our tip: Give the kids $10 or $20 each and challenge them to find the best bargain. It’s amazing how carefully they consider a purchase when they’re spending their own money!
Garage Sale Trail will be happening across Sydney, including the Inner West, with sales listed on an interactive national map.
Whether you’re based in Marrickville, Newtown, Balmain, Leichhardt, Ashfield, Summer Hill, Burwood or nearby suburbs, you can search for participating sales and plan your own shopping route.

New sales are added in the lead-up to the event, so it’s worth checking back regularly as November approaches.

A little preparation can make all the difference, particularly if you’re juggling a garage sale with young children.
1. Get the kids involved. Ask them to sort through toys, games and books they’ve outgrown. They can help make signs, arrange displays and count their earnings. Agree beforehand whether the money goes towards something special, family savings or a donation.
2. Price things to sell. Remember, shoppers are looking for bargains. Clearly marked prices and a dedicated bargain box can help keep things moving.
3. Make it easy to browse. Group similar items together, display clothes on racks where possible and put your most interesting pieces somewhere visible.
4. Be ready for early birds. Have some small change available, consider offering electronic payments and make sure everything is set up before your advertised opening time.
5. Team up with friends or neighbours. A bigger sale means more variety for shoppers and a chance to share the workload. Plus, it’s much more fun with company.

With the cost of living continuing to put pressure on family budgets, secondhand shopping makes plenty of sense.
Children grow quickly, interests change and perfectly good clothes, toys and furniture can end up unused long before they’ve reached the end of their useful life.
Buying and selling pre-loved items helps families save money while reducing the amount of waste heading to landfill.
In 2025 alone, Garage Sale Trail participants helped keep 418 tonnes of goods in use and out of landfill.
And beyond the environmental benefits, there’s something lovely about seeing a much-loved toy, book or piece of furniture find a new home.

Whether you’re planning a major spring clean, hoping to uncover a vintage gem or simply looking for a fun and affordable family outing, Garage Sale Trail is well worth adding to your November calendar.
After 16 years, the organisers are calling 2026 The Last Hurrah, with the Garage Sale Trail Foundation bringing its annual event to a close.
So gather your unwanted treasures, rally the neighbours or grab a coffee and head out for a morning of bargain hunting.
You never know what you might find around the next corner.
