MLC School Burwood – Year 5 Scholarship Now Open

“Dare to be More”

Looking for a school for your daughter that encourages bravery, challenges perceptions, and teaches responsibility? Look no further than MLC School in Burwood – Year 5 Scholarships are now open. Since its inception in 1886, the school’s mission has been to ‘educate young women to be fearless thinkers with moral courage and compassion, and to be agents of change in their own lives and the lives of others’. The school provides a socially progressive education underpinned by its Uniting Church foundations.

Year 5 Scholarships Now Open
This May, the Year 5 All-Rounder Scholarship has opened for applications for entry into Year 5, 2024. This scholarship supports girls with academic ability and aptitude in co-curricular areas like music, sport, or service, and provides 50% tuition fee relief from Year 5 to Year 12 (subject to certain conditions). The deadline for applications is Monday 31 July, 2023.

The impact of scholarships on young lives has been profound. Former MLC School Old Girl Cherie Pepperell (2020)  (2020) from the Inner West, started at MLC School in Year 9 on an All-Rounder scholarship and from day one it was clear she would chart a path to great success. After her time at MLC School, Cherise pursued her interests and is studying Engineering thanks to The University of New South Wales (UNSW) Women in Engineering Scholarship, and is now the Team Manager of the Guinness Book of World Records’ setting Sunswift Racing team.

According to Cherie, “The support of my teachers and peers was another factor that set MLC School apart from others… It is incredible the difference that a great and dedicated teacher can make to your education, subject marks and motivation.”

Why Year 5?

Unlike other schools, Year 5 is considered a year of leadership at MLC School, aimed at fast-tracking girls’ development so that Year 6 is focused on laying the foundations for success in Year 7. To this end, All Year 5 students are allocated a particular position of responsibility in the Junior School – and as a result, their confidence in themselves and their learning blossoms. This allows them to be ready to step forward into the next phase of their school lives as their senior school years approach.

The Year 5 All-Rounder Scholarship provides girls with the opportunity to access MLC School’s unique upper primary program to provide for a smooth transition to the Senior School.

The transition year

With wide ranging studies showing a decline in expected learning outcomes when junior students move into high school, Year 6 at MLC School is an immersive transition and readiness year, aimed at easing and preparing girls for Senior School. To help younger students acclimatise to their new surroundings and new routines, girls in Year 6 at MLC School move onto the Senior School campus and experience many of the activities associated with Senior School life – preparing them for and making the transition to high school an easy and natural progression.

Dare to be More

For the over 135 years, MLC School has challenged preconceptions of women’s roles and redefined expectations of what girls can and should achieve. The School’s motto, ‘Dare to be More’, is a genuine attitude that continues to drive the school’s approach to teaching girls and young women.

Beyond preparing students for success in exams, MLC School focuses on the development of the individual as a whole. From dancing, drama and debating to sports, music and science – whatever your daughter is passionate about or interested in exploring, with the guidance of specialist staff and the outstanding facilities on offer at MLC School, there are boundless opportunities for each child to achieve her full potential.

Unsurprisingly, MLC School has a record of strong results, with three MLC School girls attaining the maximum ATAR of 99.95 in 2022. Learn more about the Class of 2022 results here.
