Best Family-Friendly Winter Festivals and Events in Sydney

The best family-friendly winter events happening across Sydney over the next few weeks

Winter in Sydney has two settings: glorious crisp-sunshine day out, or “why is everyone inside and feral by 10am?” Thankfully, the city is rolling out enough markets, lights, ice rinks, festivals and school holiday activities to keep family cabin fever at bay.

From free winter markets and harbour-side festivals to train rides, French food and actual snow-adjacent fun, here’s what to add to the family calendar over the next few weeks.

✨ Vivid Sydney

When: Until Saturday 13 June
Where: Sydney CBD and harbour precincts
Cost: Mostly free, with some ticketed events

There are only a few nights left to catch Vivid Sydney, so this is your final nudge to rug up and get the kids into the city before the lights go out for another year.

The Light Walk is the obvious family-friendly pick, especially if you go early, feed everyone first and avoid trying to cover the entire route like you’re training for a night marathon. Expect big crowds, late-night energy and plenty of “look at that!” moments.

Best for families who want a free evening outing that feels big, bright and memorable.

🥬 Burwood Winter Market

When: Saturday 13 June, 9am to 3pm
Where: Burwood Park
Cost: Free entry

Burwood Park is getting the winter market treatment, with a cosy day of food, shopping and family-friendly entertainment.

Expect more than 100 stalls selling boutique fashion, handmade goods, homewares, jewellery, gourmet food and sweet treats, plus live music and a relaxed park atmosphere. It’s a particularly easy win for Inner West families: close, free to enter and low commitment.

Grab lunch, browse the stalls, let the kids roam and call it fresh air.

🌲 Katoomba Winter Magic Festival

When: Saturday 20 June
Where: Katoomba Street, Katoomba
Cost: Free entry

This is the big winter day trip for families who don’t mind a train ride and a proper coat.

Katoomba’s Winter Magic Festival turns the town’s main street into a car-free celebration of music, markets, performers, costumes and community spirit. Running since 1994, the volunteer-run festival is famous for its Grand Parade, where dancers, drummers, giant puppets and locals in their weirdest and witchiest best take over the street.

There are more than 100 stalls, children’s activities, interactive art and entertainment across the day. For older kids and teens, Youth Street at the Katoomba Civic Centre offers music workshops, open mic sessions, live local bands and free warm chai in a drug- and alcohol-free space.

❄️ Darling Harbour Winterfest

When: Winter school holidays
Where: Darling Harbour
Cost: Mix of free and paid activities

Darling Harbour is leaning hard into winter school holiday mode, with a mix of ice-skating, family entertainment, food, lights and kid-friendly attractions.

The big appeal here is convenience. You can make it as cheap or spendy as you like: wander the precinct, hit the playgrounds, grab food, or add a ticketed activity if the budget allows. The Chinese Garden of Friendship is also offering a kids-go-free school holiday offer, which is a lovely calmer option if everyone needs a break from the neon-and-sugar circuit.

Best for families who want a city outing with multiple backup plans within walking distance.

🏖️ Bondi Festival

When: Friday 3 July to Sunday 19 July
Where: Bondi Beach and Bondi Pavilion
Cost: Free and ticketed events

Bondi in winter is a different beast, and Bondi Festival makes a very good case for pulling on a puffer and heading east.

The festival runs across the school holidays with comedy, theatre, music, performances, visual art and the return of the Bondi Festival Ice Rink. The ice rink is ticketed, but the broader festival includes free and paid events, so it’s worth checking the program before you go.

This is a good one for families with mixed ages: beach walk, festival stop, hot chips, possibly skating, then home before everyone turns into a sand-covered icicle.

❄️ Chill Fest Campbelltown

When: Friday 3 July to Sunday 19 July
Where: Koshigaya Park, Campbelltown
Cost: Free entry, paid activities

Campbelltown’s Chill Fest is back for the July school holidays, turning Koshigaya Park into a winter playground with ice-skating, rides, sideshow games, winter treats and family entertainment.

Entry is free, which is parent-code for “you can wander first and decide how much damage the paid activities will do later.” It’s a strong option for families in Sydney’s south-west, or anyone willing to travel for a full winter festival set-up.

Best for kids who want lights, rides, snacks and a bit of frosty novelty without leaving Sydney.

🚂 NSW Rail Museum, Thirlmere

When: Open during the school holidays, with heritage train rides on selected days
Where: Thirlmere
Cost: Ticketed

For train-loving kids, Thirlmere is an easy school holiday hero.

The NSW Rail Museum has historic locomotives, carriages, wagons and interactive exhibitions, plus heritage train rides that make the whole outing feel like more than a museum visit. Thirlmere itself is also a good day-trip town, with Loop-Line Pies nearby and Thirlmere Lakes National Park if you want to add a picnic or short bushwalk.

Best for toddlers, primary schoolers, grandparents and anyone who thinks a vintage train ride beats another shopping centre activity.

🥐 Bastille Festival Sydney

When: Thursday 16 July to Sunday 19 July
Where: Circular Quay and The Rocks
Cost: Free entry, food and experiences extra

If your winter energy is fading by mid-July, Bastille Festival is a good rescue mission.

The free French festival takes over Circular Quay and The Rocks with food, music, art and culture. For families, the appeal is simple: wander the harbour, eat something involving pastry or cheese, soak up the atmosphere and pretend you’ve taken everyone to Paris without the airfare.

It’s likely to get busy, so go earlier in the day with younger kids or embrace the evening bustle with older ones.
