Some winter outings ask a lot of parents: bookings, backup snacks, weather plans and at least one child asking why everyone is “doing walking”.
Rekindled Winter at South Eveleigh feels refreshingly low-fuss. Running from Tuesday 16 June to Saturday 18 July, it transforms the precinct into a nostalgic indoor-outdoor winter hangout, with cosy corners, classic board games, jukebox tunes, craft activities, warm treats and quiet moments designed to help families slow down a little.
Even better, South Eveleigh already has the makings of a proper family day out: playgrounds, open green space, public art, sports courts, a skate and scooter park, casual food spots and, crucially, coffee.

At the heart of the program is the Rekindled Lounge, located on the corner of Locomotive Street and Mitchell Way, opposite Anita Gelato.
Families can settle in for old-school fun, from board games and letter writing to relaxed craft sessions and jukebox tunes. It’s the kind of outing that works across ages: toddlers can enjoy the novelty before hitting the nearby playground, older kids can get stuck into games and crafts, and parents get somewhere warm-ish, relaxed and not entirely built around chaos.

The weekly program is full of small, feel-good reasons to drop in.
Warm-Up Wednesdays offer the first 50 visitors from 11am a token for a warm cookie and gelato from Anita Gelato.
Crafternoon Thursdays run from 11am to 2pm, with hands-on activities including iron-on patches, button badge making and spirograph paper crafts. Very good for kids who like making things, and parents who like not cleaning glitter out of the dining table for three weeks.
S’mores Saturdays bring the cosy factor, with the first 100 visitors from 9am receiving a complimentary sweet or savoury s’more made with fresh ingredients from Romeo’s IGA. These are not suitable for kids under eight, and children must be accompanied by an adult, but family-friendly craft activities will also run throughout the day.
For families who need a quieter moment, Unwind Hour runs from 2pm to 3pm every Tuesday to Saturday, with music and noise dialled down for self-guided sensory time.

For kids who love trains, tools, machines or asking “but how does that work?”, the Forged in Steel heritage walking tours are the big drawcard.
Created with Harbour City Tours, these free guided tours explore South Eveleigh’s heritage-listed workshop precinct, sharing the stories of the engineers, blacksmiths, apprentices and workers who helped shape the NSW rail network. Along the way, families can see original machinery, cranes, forges and industrial artefacts from the steam era.

The beauty of South Eveleigh is that you don’t have to make Rekindled the whole outing. Around the precinct, Eveleigh Green has open public space, BBQ areas and a much-loved playground with a toddler-friendly sandpit, tree house and adventure play elements. There are also tennis, basketball and futsal courts, ping pong tables, an outdoor gym and an award-winning skate and scooter park for kids who need to burn off their winter wiggles.
There’s public art to spot too, including works like the Eveleigh Tree House and Happy Rain, plus plenty of easy food stops along Locomotive Street, including The Grounds Coffee Factory, Anita Gelato, Pepper Seeds Thai, Fishbowl and Kurtosh.
In other words: crafts, snacks, history, play and somewhere to sit. The parent-outing holy grail.
