In December 2024, Inner West Council unveiled stage one of a $6.5 million upgrade to Camdenville Park, including a brand-new playspace and sheltered picnic area with a barbecue.
We swung by to check out the new playspace on May Street, St Peters.
The playground features an appealing selection of equipment to climb, swing and balance on, including inclusive swings. At the centre of the playspace is a rope tower with bird’s nest style lookouts, which will no doubt be popular with older children. For the young ones, there is a spinning saucer, a playhouse, a tippee and various animal-themed balancing logs.
While we were impressed with the selection of equipment and natural play elements, there is a glaring issue at this playground, with just one shade sail for the entire playground (covering the playhouse area). All the plantings are new, and there are also no established trees in the surrounding area to provide cover.
After much criticism from the public on their social media, Inner West Council has stated they are investigating adding another shade sail to the playground. In the meantime, we suggest visiting the playground early in the morning or late in the afternoon to avoid the heat as well as the usual precautions of sunscreen and hats.
Also on our agenda … coffee (always)! Happily, Copper Cafe is at 29 May Street, a short stroll from the playground.
