At The Inner West Mums we get that life changes when you become a parent. A night out isn’t several glasses of rosé, a shimmy on the dance floor and a kebab wolfed down in the wee hours of the morning as you wait for an Uber. That’s why we love Summer Hill Village.
Any night of the week or over the weekend, Summer Hill Village’s bounty of cafes, restaurants and child-friendly wine bars (yes you read that right) are buzzing. But if it’s been a long time between drinks at the Village – we’ve got you covered. Read on as we chat with Summer Hill locals on their must-visit food venues that will hit the spot with every member of your gang.
My Brow Lady owner Mev, whose expert team are obsessed with transforming brows and lashes, says that with all the food options, it can be hard to narrow down her favourite eateries. Having opened My Brow Lady in Summer Hill 7 years ago, Mev knows a thing or two about the local area – not to mention creating perfectly shaped brows and alluring lashes, sometimes in as little as 15 minutes (perfect for busy mums).
Mev suggests that couples and families looking for a great day-time meal and welcoming atmosphere can’t go wrong with Envy Deli Café on Smith Street. With a magnificent jacaranda tree in its outdoor courtyard, this mod-Oz café has all the breakfast, brunch and lunch faves – from ricotta pancakes, B&E rolls and healthy breakfast bowls to burgers, gourmet sambos and healthy veggie tarts.
Want to spice things up? 40 Grains Thai Restaurant, with its gourmet Thai cuisine and spacious dining area (perfect for navigating bulky prams and strollers), gets Mev’s seal of approval for a family dinner. Mev’s tip: always check out Chef Josh’s everchanging specials menu when you’re in the mood for something a bit fancy or out of the ordinary. This month there’s Black Pepper King Prawns served on a sizzling hot plate with capsicum and spring onion. Yum!
Whilst at Fair Trade At the Hill, a gorgeous store brimming with homewares, toys, jewellery, bags and accessories – all made by fair trade organisations and local and global social enterprises, Jan – Fair Trade At The Hill Ambassador – says not to miss a coffee from Plunge No 46. Or a legendary corn, zucchini and haloumi fritter for that matter.
For an evening with the family, Jan loves Italian and suggests Andiamo Trattoria del Popolo which translates to trattoria of the people.
A Summer Hill Village institution since 1997, on any fair-weather evening you’ll find families and groups spread across Andiamo’s white table clothed outdoor tables on bustling Lackey Street tucking into generous bowls of hand made gnocchi, pasta or sharing slices of stone baked pizza.
Design duo Emma and John from Sweets Workshop, an art gallery and illustration studio located in Summer Hill’s stunning Art Deco Penalt Building, say there’s no better way to end a meal or stay cool on a warm afternoon than with scoop of refreshing gelato. A Summer Hill stalwart for over 13 years, Emma’s illustrations capture the spirit of Sydney that is so familiar and well loved by inner west families and on a visit to Sweets Workshop you’ll find her artwork adorning t-shirts, art prints (check out their prints of local houses and buildings) as well as homeware, gifts and stationery.
Emma shared that her family has a special ritual. Every Saturday afternoon, after they close Sweets Workshop, they take a short walk down Lackey St to local gelateria Lo Presti Ultimate Gelato. After a mouth-watering inspection of the freshly made, Italian-style gelato (we love the Amalfi Lemon Sorbet), flavour selections are made. Sometimes one, maybe even two delicious scoops. Emma says they often catch up with friends there as well.
Keen to give these eateries a go? The good news is that getting to Summer Hill Village is easy – accessible by train, light rail and bus, and with ample street parking – so pop on over and make family date night a weekly fixture at Sydney’s favourite high street.
Want to experience Summer Hill Village’s amazing food scene for yourself? Don’t miss Summer Hill Social! For one day only – Sunday March 10, 11am to 5pm – Lackey and Smith Streets in Summer Hill will be transformed into a long lunch pop-up with live music and exciting offers and activations from local retailers. Emma and John from Sweets Workshop will be hosting a creative pop-up with a chill out colouring and activity zone for kids big and small.
