If your child loves cats, or you wish to increase your child’s familiarity with cats, it’s worth a visit to the Catmosphere Cat Cafe in Surry Hills – Australia’s first space-themed cat cafe!
The Catmosphere Cat Cafe Sydney operators are passionate about cats, and their rescue and welfare. Partnering with two rescue groups, the World League for Protection of Animals and Kitten University, Catmosphere fosters and gives exposure to cats and kittens which are available for adoption.
A one-hour visit to the cat room costs $20 per adult and $10 per child under ten years. A half-hour visit to the kitten room is $22 for all visitors (there is no child discount in this room). Hot and cold beverages (yes, they do baby cinos!) and a simple cat-shaped cookie are included in the cost. While walk-ins are accepted, it’s wise to make a booking ahead of time since visitor numbers are limited.
The welfare of the cats is of utmost priority at Catmosphere. A maximum of ten humans are allowed in the upstairs cat room and five in the kitten room below. The rooms feature numerous ledges, shelves, nooks, and hidey holes to which the cats can retreat when they want to sleep or cast a watchful eye over the visiting humans. There is also a separate rest area for the cats when required. The cafe closes from 3–4 pm each day to give all the cats a break. And the hours for the kitten room are reduced too.
We chose to the cat experience for our first-ever visit. At our session there were eight visitors and eleven cats in the room. The Cat Commander on duty explained to us, ‘We like the cats to outnumber the humans in each room.’
On arrival our friendly Cat Commander introduced all the cats to us including their humorous space-themed names, their personalities and preferences. There are a number of rules to remember when visiting Catmosphere. Most importantly, visitors may not pick up the cats. They are also encouraged to keep low to the floor, stay calm and pat the cats very gently. A basket of cat toys is available if any of the cats seem in the mood to play. Our five-year-old, who has had minimal exposure to cats but would dearly love to own a cat one day, quickly got the hang of interacting with the cats successfully.
A visit to Catmosphere is a fun and memorable outing, and something entirely different from the usual park/beach/pool visits! For families, it also provides an opportunity to teach kids about cats and their care.
Catmosphere Cat Cafe Sydney is located in the heart of Surry Hills, close to Central Station.
