There’s something quite special about visiting a well known place at night, especially for kids. And even more so with a backdrop as stunning as Sydney Harbour. Well, here’s an outing that’s bound to a few tick boxes for excitement and originality, Vivid Sydney will again light up Taronga Zoo this autumn/winter.
Pack the coats and hats, and explore wildlife of a different kind – light sculptures or lanterns inspired by creatures great and small.
Wild Lights at Taronga Zoo will run from May 27 to June 18. There are two sessions available to book each day, 5.30pm and 7.30pm. The SkyRail will be running, for a birds-eye view, but you’ll need tickets (you can book these when you purchase the event tickets). And the food hall will be open for dinner, snacks or a hot chocolate.
Also worth noting is that Discover NSW and Parent NSW vouchers are accepted. And children aged under four are free.
There are 18 light sculptures on this year’s Zoo walk, themed Where Nature Shines. They’ll span creatures from the Australian outback, the African savannah and the forests of Indonesia. They’ll also head underwater with ocean-inspired lanterns. Three of the installations are new, and have a focus on inclusivity.
A member of the Inner West Mums team took their baby and 3 year old in 2019 and had a magical time. No actual animals were available to visit, but the light sculptures were so bright and fun, it was an exciting journey to explore and find them all. It was pretty busy, so if you have a little one, consider bringing the carrier if you can – there wasn’t a lot of room for a pram.
Tickets for Wild Lights at Taronga Zoo go on sale Thursday March 24 at 11am, visit: https://taronga.org.au/sydney-zoo/events/vivid
